SHAK
Nairobi

Providing hope to families of persons
living with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus.

WHAT WE DO

Advocacy, sensitization and support for people living with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus through publicity, immunization and lifelong care.

Primary Prevention

We promote immunization among women of childbearing ages to prevent future occurrences of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. A regular intake of vitamin B-based folic acid supplements and foods rich in folate such as green leafy vegetables, red beans, fresh fruits, sweet potatoes and fortified cereals reduces the risks of neural tube defects in births. This intake should be consistent during the first trimester (the first 3 months) of pregnancy. Folic acid supplements are not family planning pills; Please take note.

Lifelong Care

As caregivers of people with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus seek medical interventions in hospitals accross Nairobi, we provide free meals, accommodation, training, rehabilitation and conduct income-generating activities through the House of Hope Project.

Publicity and Advocacy

We educate the public on Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus on and offline through policy formulation and advocacy on disability rights to promote social inclusion and eradicate discrimination and stigma. We are currently pushing for mandatory food fortification in Africa in partnership with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)
